Good Old Fashioned Neighborhood Corn Roast

On a bright cool 7th day of September, the 7th annual “Good Old Fashioned Neighborhood Corn Roast,” took place at Bi-Centennial Park organized by Livonia’s very own Bill Joyner. The Lions Club of Livonia cooked 700 ears of corn provided by Westborn Market. The aroma of corn cooking in large pots over two camp stoves filled the air. The corn was sweet. The line of hungry mouths waiting for an ear of corn was full of smiles and laughter. The campfires were encircled by more than 31 service organizations in colorful tents offering treats, literature and friendly greetings. The Clarenceville High School Basketball Team and their coaches volunteered to shuck the corn, set up tables and assist anyone needing a helping hand. Members of the Livonia AM Rotary Club lent a hand setting up and cleaning corn.

Children were delighted with free treats and hot wheel cars. Elected officials at all levels Federal, State and Local took turns serving the corn and wearing the special “Corn Hat.’

The who’s who of officials circulated through the crowds chatting with residents. Bill Joyner estimates that over 1,500 residents attended. Both Livonia Rotary Clubs participated in the event distributing water pop and cookies.

Special thanks goes to the club members who came early to set up and those who stayed late to pack up. The effort spent supporting this community event makes our lives all the richer and our neighbors closer.
