Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels

They are unseen and unheard. Their productivity in society long expired, and they live lives of quiet desperation. They are lonely for company and hungry for food. These are the clients of Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels.

Our speakers last week were Danni Murphy and Chris Brown of the Ypsilanti Wheels on Meals program. Chris explained Meals on Wheels’ mission is to provide meals, personal care items, human contact, and general welfare checks for homebound seniors in the Ypsi area. They deliver 250 meals per day, 120,000 meals per year.

The staff of workers for the program includes a combination of paid staff and volunteers. They also provide a personal care pantry, as 2/3 of their clients are incontinent. Less than 10% of their funding is furnished by government funds.

Their mission at Wheels on Meals is to make those among us in their twilight years a little more like their golden years. Just because someone is unseen and quiet doesn’t mean they are not among us. It is refreshing that Meals on Wheels can be a voice for the quiet and can shine a light on the unseen.
