27 young ladies showed up at today's first of the year Stevenson High School Interact (Rotary) Club meeting at 2:25 p.m. (No guys, yet.) I arrived with the pizza and pop a few minutes later. (An hour earlier this was not even on my radar screen, other than just attending the meeting, which ended by 2:59 p.m.) The next Stevenson Interact meeting is tentative for Tuesday, September 30th. But imagine -- 27 young ladies, and almost what seemed as equal numbers of Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen.
Many thanks to Wayne Kinney for ordering the pizzas and pop at Papa John's just down the street from Stevenson. I merely picked it up. But how was I going to possibly bring a few flyers, a calendar book, four liters of pop, and five pizzas into the school? Thankfully, in the parking lot two parents saw my elderly distress and asked their daughters to hop out of the cars and give an old grandpa some help. They carried in the pizzas and pop! Bravo to so many great American youth! Bravo also to Yara, Liliana, Lana, and Madison, the leaders!
In their meeting, they asked me to present about upcoming volunteer service projects. They have been invited to volunteer at the Saturday, September 27th Road Clean-up and the October 22nd World Polio Day Community Spaghetti Dinner. Their parents and families were also invited to attend, as paid customers, the Spaghetti Dinner, but the young people, as volunteers, usually attend for free. They get points in their high school for volunteering. I also shared some information about our efforts as two Rotary clubs to help our city with the rebuilding of Rotary Park.
Rotarily,
Rev. Dave Stechholz
