Club Meeting Featuring, Jim Baringhaus, Greenleaf Commission, and Robb Harper, My Green Michigan
Our meeting was opened by Club President Erin Dobbins with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for Suicide Awareness Month, followed by a meditative thought given by Greg Greene.
Happy Bucks were collected by Sharon Pommerville. Nancy Darga was happy that her house is no longer surrounded by orange road cones. Bob Carris and his wife Teri just celebrated 52 years of marriage. Victoria Haltom has been busy working on a tablescape for her daughter’s upcoming wedding. Greg Greene was very happy that even though the road cleanup was rained out on Saturday, the group still met for breakfast, which was very nice. Peter Dale reported on the pollination gardens project at Greenmead.
Our speakers today were Robb Harper from My Green Michigan and Jim Baringhaus from the Greenleaf Commission.
Jim Baringhaus said the commission is working on four areas: electric vehicle infrastructure, tree replacement, recycling, and solid‑waste policies. Goodwill will now take Styrofoam to be recycled.
Robb Harper spoke next, explaining that his company is the largest food‑waste collection and recycling company in Michigan. His company has municipal drop‑off programs for residents to bring their food waste. They also have commercial collections where they pick up at schools and restaurants and turn the food waste into compost. Livonia does not have any city collection points yet, but it is something they are considering for the future. Forty percent of all food is thrown away. HopCat has a collection program where they pick up scraps several times a week. Rob said they are working with an elementary school where they collect food scraps, turn them into compost, and the school sells the compost for $15 for a 40‑lb bag.
Our next meeting on September 30 will be at Greenmead. Meet at the long white building, the Quaker Meeting House. There will be no Zoom meeting. After the meeting, we will tour the gardens.
